Texas school district makes big changes to security after nearby school shooting


Last May, 10 people were killed when a teenage gunman opened fire on at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas. Nine students and one teacher were killed in the small Texas town.


One School District’s Security Upgrade: Facial Recognition, Tracking IDs and AR-15s

TEXAS CITY, Texas—The school district here uses a facial recognition system to scan for people not allowed on school grounds. IDs track the whereabouts of students and staff. Teachers have cellphone panic buttons to alert police and soon will have special locks on classroom doors that can be activated remotely. A newly expanded security team keeps 22 AR-15 rifles in their offices.

Tracking every student’s move. Northside I.S.D. is rolling out new technology that does just that. At school, it can be hard to keep track of everyone. “I’m always worried about my daughter being at school,” said Ernest Castro, a parent. “I check on my kids everytime I come in, it’s like once a week I come in to check on the attendance,” said Gina Lopez, another parent. For lopez, knowing her kids are in class at Northside’s John Jay High School is about to get easier. The school is launching a pilot program to track students through a chip in their student I.D. cards.
